The trailer came right at the end of the Nintendo Direct broadcast, and it did not show a whole lot of the game. It did, however, hint that time travel would play a large role in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, which could play a sizable role in the fanbase’s new theory.

The theory comes from Barrett Courtney, a member of the YouTube channel Kinda Funny, who tweeted a thread laying out his theory that players will take control of Ganondorf instead of Link in the upcoming title. Courtney also says that he thinks that Ganondorf is the hero from 10,000 years before referenced in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. He theorizes that this is why The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is coming to the Switch instead of any of the many other popular titles from the series’ past, as playing as Ganondorf in the sequel could tie the sequel with Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild.

Fans in the comments have also voiced some support for the theory using details that they picked up in the trailer as well. A rather large one is that the robe Link appears to be wearing in the trailer matches Ganondorf’s almost exactly. Courtney also says that this theory may very well be why Nintendo is waiting to reveal The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’s official title. Nintendo has said that the title is very important, and Courtney believes that the title will give away that the players are playing as Ganondorf, which Nintendo wants to keep hidden for as long as possible.

Of course, there is no way to know whether or not Courtney’s theory is true until more is known about the game, but there is definitely a lot of evidence out there supporting his ideas. Games from The Legend of Zelda do all connect and share a timeline, so if Courtney’s theory is correct the newest entry in the series could play a massive role in developing Ganondorf’s backstory. With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 releasing sometime next year, hopefully, fans do not have much longer to wait to get some more information on what to expect.
