It appears as though the biggest piece of new content slated for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is a brand new dungeon that Nintendo has developed for the game called The Twilight Cave. The bad news is that the only way to unlock the dungeon seems to be by using the Wolf Link amiibo, which is sure to be difficult to find come launch.
Hopefully Nintendo makes it possible to unlock the dungeon in-game through other means, or allows Wii U owners to purchase it as DLC from the eShop. Unfortunately, both scenarios seem unlikely, and it is probable that users will be forced to purchase the Wolf Link amiibo to experience the new dungeon.
The game’s other amiibo functionality is far less substantial, however. The other Zelda amiibo, such as the Toon Link and Sheik amiibo, will allow players to do things such as regenerate hearts and arrows instantly. It’s unknown which Zelda amiibo does what, but expect Nintendo to clarify within the next couple of months.
It may disappoint some that Nintendo is locking content like new dungeons behind amiibo paywalls, but considering the sales success of the figures, it’s hard to blame them. Consumers have been buying amiibo like hotcakes, and so Nintendo has responded by increasing the importance of the figures in games. This seems like a trend that’s likely to continue moving forward, so Nintendo fans should be prepared for more games to require amiibo to unlock significant content.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD will be available March 4th, exclusively for the Nintendo Wii U.
