Are they friends? Are they soulmates? Are they simply bound together by fate/the Triforce? Nintendo has kept their relationship flirtatious in the past, but still incredibly ambiguous for fans. We took this question straight to Patricia Summersett, the actor responsible for giving Zelda a voice in Breath of the Wild, to get her take on the Princess’ relationship with the mute protagonist, Link.

GR: So, actually, you mention the frog scene, and the relationship between Link and Zelda has always been left kind of ambiguous. In your own opinion, do you think they’re a couple or are they just REALLY good friends?

GR: It certainly keeps it a little more PG, anyway.

Well, maybe you’ll be portraying her when she does it.

Summersett makes a very interesting point when stating that “there is something about them not having to be a couple that’s kind of great,” because the ambiguity of Link and Zelda’s relationship is one of the most alluring aspects of the narrative. If Link isn’t motivated by primal desires or through a long forgotten bond like he is in Breath of the Wild, then it’s a greater showing of his character – and the same can be said for Zelda and the strength she possesses.

Whatever the relationship is, it’s particularly interesting to be given some insight from the actress portraying the iconic Princess in Breath of the Wild. Who knows, maybe Summersett will have the opportunity to completely change the characters’ bond in future iterations, but that will ultimately be in the hands of Nintendo.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently available for Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
