Saldaña has played Gamora since 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. She’ll next be seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but as an alternate version of the character from a different timeline, as the one fans followed in the first two films and Avengers: Infinity War was killed by Thanos so he could obtain the Soul Stone.

During an interview with Variety, Saldaña explained her complicated feelings about playing the character, explaining that the green body paint was a difficult process to go through. “I can never say no to anything, but that green makeup? I wouldn’t be upset if it didn’t happen again,” Saldaña explained. “I miss Gamora, but I don’t miss 3:30 a.m. calls and five-hour makeup sessions and trips to the dermatologist afterwards.”
In addition to Saldaña loving the character of Gamora, she explains that she tries not to let the process get to her. “Every time that you know that 8-year-old or that dad and mom or those generational fans that remind me that what I did was special to them, it makes me not be cynical about Marvel. It makes me understand that younger audiences should stop being overlooked,” she shared. “They have feelings too and if something impacts them, just because we consider it stupid or immature or cheeky, doesn’t mean it’s not special.”
Gamora’s role in her next appearance is one that fans have been eagerly anticipating. She has no memory of her time with the Guardians because she never lived through them in her timeline. She technically fully buys into the Thanos propaganda, and her whereabouts are unknown. Peter Quill was devastated by her loss, meaning their romance will probably be a central plot point. But with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set to feature Adam Warlock, it might be possible that she finds love with him, as the two did have a romance in the comics.
Such an ending would be bittersweet, but it may happen, given the Gamora Quill knew and loved is dead. It would show the difference between the two characters and feature another facet of Quill’s grief, which has been explored since the first film. This may very well be the last time Saldaña plays Gamora, as director James Gunn has moved on to a leadership gig at DC and remarked that he intends to finish his work with the titular team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
